Our concern leading to our misperceptions Our misperceptions creating our concern

An interesting recent study by Ipsos MORI provides new evidence that political ignorance is a serious problem in many countries.

Survey respondents in the 14 nations included in the study massively overestimate the general unemployment rate and the percentage of immigrants in their country’s population, reported Reuters. Even in Sweden, the country that scored highest, many respondents don’t have a clue about politically important issues such as the unemployment rate (which they think is three times higher than it actually is) and immigration (which they overestimate by “only” about 45 percent).

Italians rank highest in the “Ignorance Index”, closely followed by Americans.

Ilya Somin, writing in a Washington Post blog, points out that many of these mistakes might have political consequences. Undue pessimism about the economy is obviously relevant, he says, since economic issues are almost always near the top of voters’ list of priorities. Overestimating the percentage of immigrants may promote exaggerated fears of being uprooted by foreign cultures and strengthen support for restricting migration, which can inflict great harm on both would-be immigrants and natives.

Reality bites

So why are people’s perceptions so far from reality? Writing in The Guardian, Bobby Duffy, managing director of Ipsos MORI’s Social Research Institute, tries to give some answers.

Duffy says it’s partly that people just struggle with basic math, and that some clearly misunderstand the questions.

The media also plays a role in deepening our misperceptions. But we need to be careful here. “We can’t lay the blame entirely at one particular or even type of newspaper: if the media are a cause, it’s a much broader, global issue,” says Duffy. “The real driver is how we remember information, where vivid anecdotes stick, regardless of whether they are describing something very rare.”

When answering these questions such as crime rate and unemployment rate, we are sending a message about what’s worrying us as much as trying to get the right answers. “Cause and effect can run both ways, with our concern leading to our misperceptions as much as our misperceptions creating our concern,” he says.

The Ways of Social Justice Goes Digital

Justice

Harvard University’s political philosophy class Justice is one of the most popular online courses ever. It’s taught by Harvard philosophy professor Michael Sandel and tries to answer one essential question: What is the right thing to do?
Philosophy

Would you steal a drug that your loved one needs to survive? Is it right for the government to tax the rich more? Is it sometimes wrong to tell the truth? Can we put a price on a human life? Should the law try to regulate and promote our morality?

We face moral decisions in our everyday lives. The course turns to some great philosophers, such as Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, Jeremy Bentham and John Locke for answers. In the process, it offers students a chance to challenge the reasoning behind the moral choices we make every day.

In the introduction of the course, Sandel says: “Philosophy estranges us from the familiar by inviting and provoking a new way of seeing. Once the familiar turns strange, it’s never quite the same again.”

The course is available on Edx.org and you can also find course videos on Youku.

Virtues that stand the test of time

Loyalty

We’ve seen movies about heroes who display courage, loyalty and coolness under fire. But what about somebody who sits in front of a computer all day? Is it possible to display and cultivate character if you are just an office clerk?

This is a question posed by The New York Times columnist David Brooks in a recent article titled “The Mental Virtues”. And his answer is “Yes”.

Brooks says even if you are alone in your office, you are thinking. And thinking well with a lot of information coming at you is a moral challenge.

Brooks cites a 2007 book, Intellectual Virtues, written by Robert C. Roberts and W. Jay Wood. The book explores some so-called mental virtues, and we can grade ourselves on how we represent each virtue.

1. Love of learning. Some people are more curious than others, either by cultivation or by nature.

2. Courage. The obvious form of intellectual courage is the willingness to hold unpopular views. Intellectual courage is knowing when to be daring and when to be cautious. An intellectually courageous person is willing to look at things that are hard to look at.
Courage

3. Firmness, which is a quality of mental flexibility. You don’t want to be a person who easily surrenders his or her beliefs when met with opposition. On the other hand, you don’t want to hold dogmatically to a belief against all evidence.

4. Humility. The humble person fights against vanity and self-importance. He’s not thinking of himself much at all. A humble person is open to learning from anyone at any stage in life.

5. Autonomy. You want to be a person who can think for yourself. On the other hand, you won’t reject all guidance from people who know what they are talking about. Autonomy is the median of knowing when to bow to authority and when not to, when to follow a role model and when not to, when to adhere to tradition and when not to.

6. Generosity. You are willing to share knowledge and give others credit. It also means you are willing to forgive other people’s mistakes.

A future half-empty?

The 2013 film World War Z (starring Brad Pitt) depicts a future unraveled by a zombie plague. file photo

Our future, according to Hollywood, is not pretty. Take two movies that are currently showing for example: In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, humans battle with super-intelligent apes for world domination. In Divergent, survivors in a post-apocalyptic world are pigeonholed into five factions. Those who don’t fit in are hunted down and persecuted.

Both movies belong to the dystopian sci-fi genre. Dystopia is the antonym of utopia, which was coined by the English writer Thomas More. In his 1516 book Utopia, More described a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean. A utopia is an ideal society with peace, equality, justice and prosperity.

But in dystopian fiction, the world is usually a bleak place ruled by a totalitarian government. Mistrust and fear permeates the whole of society. High-tech machines and tools are used to wage wars or suppress discontent citizens.

Just as bad news grabs more attention, many dystopian works are immensely successful. Movies such as The Hunger Games trilogy, Total Recall and World War Z are all box office successes worldwide.

But now a group of scholars and science fiction writers are saying: enough of the depressing stuff. They say negative visions of the future depicted in pop culture are limiting people’s abilities to dream of a better world.

US writer Neal Stephenson is one of the dissenters. A sci-fi writer himself, he sees the cynicism of the current dystopian sci-fi rut and calls for a more optimistic approach–fewer zombies and catastrophes, more creative inventions and solutions.

Bright, not bleak

In an interview with the BBC, Stephenson said he got this idea from president of Arizona State University (ASU) Michael Crow, who said at a conference on futurology that science fiction needed to supply ideas that scientists and engineers could actually implement.

Stephenson wasted no time to take action. In 2011, he partnered with ASU and started Project Hieroglyph to rally writers to inject new optimism into science fiction so as to inspire the next generation to build a better future.

The project brings writers and scientists together to learn from and influence each other. Renowned writers have been working with scientists to imagine technically-grounded science fiction stories depicting futures achievable within the next 50 years, the BBC reported. These stories, collected in a book entitled Hieroglyph, were just released last week.

Ed Finn, director of Project Hieroglyph, wrote in the Slate online magazine: “We are in desperate need of this sort of long view in contemporary culture, where we can barely see beyond the next Apple press conference.”

“What’s really exciting about Hieroglyph is the idea of bringing some constructive criticism to our notions of the future: not just pointing out problems but ponying up some possible solutions,” Finn said.

Hieroglyph writers’ visions of tomorrow

 Environmentalists fight to stop entrepreneurs from building the first extreme tourism hotel in Antarctica;

 People vie for citizenship on a near-zero-gravity moon of Mars, which has become a hub for innovation;

 Animal activists use drones to track elephant poachers;

 A crew crowdfunds a mission to the Moon to set up an autonomous 3-D printing robot to create new building materials;

 A 20-kilometer-tall tower spurs the US steel industry, sparks new methods of generating renewable energy.
